Backpacking Shakedown

Who is Betsy Leighton?

What is MCAS?

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a chronic condition that affects all organ systems. It can cause severe, disabling symptoms every day, including potentially fatal anaphylaxis.

The common triggers for MCAS are infections, toxic exposures including mold exposure and EMFs, trauma, concussions, and stress.

MCAS often occurs with other chronic conditions like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Managing MCAS is challenging because many healthcare providers are unaware of it, and diagnostic tests can be unreliable. Treatments include antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers in the form of medications and supplements, along with avoiding triggers. Check out this post on managing MCAS.

My backpacking shakedown

I recently did a backpacking shakedown to prepare for the backpacking season with my new gear. This recent post discusses the preparations I’ve made for backpacking season. It’s always a good idea to set up all of your gear before heading out into the wilderness. So, I did a backpacking shakedown in my backyard. I set up my tent and sleep system.

Shelter changes

The main difference in erecting my shelter this season is that I’ve switched to using an ultralight Durston Iceline telescoping trekking pole as the main tent pole, instead of my ZPacks carbon tent pole (I’m not affiliated with Durston). This way, my trekking pole serves the dual purpose of being both a tent pole and a trekking pole, and I’m saving 75 grams with this switch, even counting the addition of a 12-gram pole jack.

For my shelter, I switched out these heavier titanium tent stakes for these carbon ones.

Sleep system changes

Another substitution I made was getting the ZenBivy Ultralight Sheet to keep my head warmer at night when I’m sleeping in my tent, making it possible to ditch my 400-gram Nemo Switchback Sleeping Pad and just use the Gossamer Gear Thinlite Pad (I’m not affiliated with Gossamer Gear). The ZenBivy sheet is supposed to avoid drafts on the sides where your quilt gaps when you turn over, while keeping your head warmer with an insulated hood. It was super comfy when I tried it out on my backpacking shakedown, and I’m excited to try it in the wild. My quilt is an Enlightened Equipment Conundrum short/reg 0 degree 950 fill, which was warm enough last year as long as I didn’t move at all (hah!) (I’m not affiliated with Enlightened Equipment). But the ZenBivy system requires that you install patches with hooks to attach the sheet to the quilt. You can see the round black patches I affixed to my quilt in the photo below.

Other changes to my gear

Other than those two main changes, I’m using the same ULA Quipment XS Circuit Pack (not affiliated with ULA either). I switched to a lighter power bank to save 30 grams, and a lighter headlamp, which saves me 10 grams.

The bucket theory

The bucket theory simplifies understanding symptom reactions with MCAS. Imagine your body as an empty bucket you don’t want to overflow. Reactions to various stimuli fill the histamine bucket at different rates, forming the total histamine level (how full your bucket is). More histamine means more symptoms. By managing triggers, reducing exposures, and taking medications and supplements, you can control your bucket’s level.
