Who is Betsy Leighton?

I’m a writer, blogger, and healer dedicated to helping individuals reconnect with their innate peace and wholeness by healing nervous system dysregulation. My personal experience with chronic illness called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) shapes my work, and my content offers tools to empower those with chronic illness to improve their well-being and take charge of their health.

I created the Sacred Self-Healing Method and am a trained and certified Safe and Sound Protocol provider, an author, blogger, and A Course in Miracles Teacher. I hold a Master of Divinity in Spiritual Counseling and am a trained spiritual mentor, with certificates in sound healingaromatherapy, nutrition, and Sacred Deathcare. I offer a self-study certificate program in the Sacred Self-Healing Method, provide spiritual counseling and coaching, courses, and supported subscriptions for the Safe and Sound Protocol.

What is MCAS?

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a chronic condition that affects all organ systems. It can cause severe, disabling symptoms every day, including potentially fatal anaphylaxis. MCAS often occurs with other chronic conditions like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Managing MCAS is challenging because many healthcare providers are unaware of it, and diagnostic tests can be unreliable. Treatments include antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers, as well as avoiding triggers. Check out this post on managing MCAS.

Intention

Sacred Self-Healing relies on intention and frequency. Intention directs frequency to bring about healing. The universal formula for healing is:

Intention + Frequency = Healing.

In this expression, “frequency” refers to the specific healing modality being applied. Setting an intention is particularly beneficial when utilizing self-healing methods such as frequency and forgiveness. This post covers more information on the power of intention.

Beneficial Frequency

Beneficial frequency refers to natural vibrations that synchronize biological and Earth systems, to support overall harmony. For instance, visible red and blue light from the sun are beneficial frequencies because they regulate circadian rhythms. Likewise, Earth’s Schumann resonance is a naturally occurring frequency that aligns internal and external rhythms for health. This post discusses beneficial frequency in more depth.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness, like love, is seen as a high-frequency energetic state connected to compassion and gratitude. In contrast, emotions such as resentment and anger are thought to have lower frequencies, constricting rather than elevating well-being. Forgiveness helps elevate energy, promote emotional healing, and support physiological balance. Science hasn’t measured the frequency of forgiveness, but studies show that forgiveness can improve heart and brain patterns and help the body work more smoothly. Forgiveness brings balance, healing, and peace—both emotionally and physically. This post delves deeper into forgiveness.

What are chakras?

Chakras are energy centers in the body. The seven main chakras are the Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown. There are many other known chakras, but these seven are the primary ones. They are located at nerve centers in the body, and each chakra corresponds with a color. (See the Chakra Guide below.) Chakras are vortices where energy enters or leaves the body, and chakras are known to metabolize energy. You can initiate healing of the body, mind, and spirit via the chakras, and we can access our connection to Spirit through them.

What is chakra healing?

Chakras are energy centers in the body. The seven main Chakras correspond to nerve centers: Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown. You can heal your chakras using many modalities that combine intuition and frequency.

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a holistic healing modality reputed to be over 6000 years old. Aromatherapy works on the physical, emotional, and energetic levels simultaneously, and it can be used to reduce stress, muscle tension, pain, and inflammation, support energetic balancing, and harmonize moods. Aromatherapy is a form of frequency healing.

Aromatherapy for chakra balancing

For chakra balancing, essential oils don’t have to be applied directly to the chakra in question (and that could be tricky with some chakras). They can be applied to the skin (when properly diluted with a carrier oil), diffused, or sniffed from the bottle. The method of delivery doesn’t matter as much as the choice of the oil and the intention behind it.

When choosing which essential oil to support a particular chakra, you can purchase prepared sets with oils designated for each chakra. In fact, I have a set of oils for sale here. If you have experience with essential oils, use your favorites. Lighter, floral oils are associated with the upper chakras, while earthier tones are suitable for the lower chakras.

Another way to select an essential is to use aromatherapy manuals or websites that provide metaphysical information on the oils they cover, and you could look up an oil you feel drawn to. In general, if you are drawn to an oil, it likely will help you. I subscribe to the “if it feels good, use it” theory of essential oil use.

After you have chosen your oil, the key is to set an intention for what you would like it to do; ie, what you would like support with. State this intention out loud, write it down, or meditate upon it silently.

Here’s an example

Here is a real-life example of using essential oils to balance a particular chakra. Before I went to divinity school, I had a strong sense that I was meant to cultivate a spiritual skill, but I hadn’t yet honed in on my gift for spiritual healing. I just knew that I was meant to do something with my spiritual side. I met with my aromatherapist, and she helped me settle on the qualities I wanted to nurture. She selected the essential oil Vetiver for grounding my spiritual yearnings into form. Vetiver balances the second chakra, the seat of creativity, desire, emotions, and movement. I began applying diluted Vetiver to my Hara point (a few inches below the navel) each day and meditating on my goal—identifying how to use my spiritual gifts to help others. Within a few weeks, I received clear guidance that I was to start seminary. Voila!

Supporting your chakras with aromatherapy

A healing session with me begins with balancing the chakras. In your session recap, I may offer guidance on which chakras are out of balance. One way to support this healing work between sessions is to use essential oils.

Essential oils are aromatic oils derived from plants, bark, flowers, roots, etc. They are different from cooking oils in that they are highly volatile and readily evaporate. They are also bioactive and penetrate the skin easily, the nasal passages, and even the blood-brain barrier. They are best cold-pressed or steam-distilled.

It’s important to exercise caution with essential oils. Many popular brands advocate using unlimited amounts to heal everything from the common cold to cancer. But, like anything you put into your body or on your skin, essential oils need to be metabolized by your liver. If you overload your metabolic pathways, you could end up with more problems than you started with!

Tips for the safe use of essential oils

Here are some tips for the safe use of essential oils to support your healing:

  • Choose only organic essential oils – available at local co-ops, or my favorite supplier here.
  • One method of delivery is to put five to ten drops of pure essential oil in a diffuser. Make sure you are diffusing only pure or “neat” essential oils that haven’t been mixed with a carrier oil. There are many inexpensive diffusers out there, some even plug into your car outlet or USB port, or you can wear them as jewelry. This is my favorite home diffuser.
  • Some essential oils can cause skin sensitivity, so unless you are working with a trained aromatherapist, don’t apply them directly to your skin. But you can add a drop to your hand lotion, or a few drops to your bath pre-mixed with a teaspoon of carrier oil like coconut, almond, or jojoba oil.
  • Do not use more than 10 total drops of all essential oils on/in your body per day.

Safe essential oils

Aromatherapy is part of Sacred Self-Healing. The following chart lists specific essential oils that are useful for balancing the chakras. The oils chosen are safe for pregnancy and are not contraindicated for those with medical conditions. However, if you have any questions about your specific condition, please consult a trained aromatherapist or your doctor. You know your body best. Please speak with your doctor before using essential oils to make sure they are right for you.

The bucket theory

The bucket theory simplifies understanding symptom reactions with MCAS. Imagine your body as an empty bucket you don’t want to overflow. Reactions to various stimuli fill the histamine bucket at different rates, forming the total histamine level (how full your bucket is). More histamine means more symptoms. By managing triggers, reducing exposures, and taking medications and supplements, you can control your bucket’s level.

Sign up for the SSP!

I’ve found the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) to be the most helpful bottom-up healing strategy if your nervous system has been overloaded with toxic exposures, including mold or non-native EMFs, chronic infections, concussions, stress, or trauma. The SSP is a passive listening therapy based on Polyvagal Theory that helps heal nervous system dysregulation. Many people with MCAS and other chronic conditions have nervous system dysregulation stemming from infections, toxic exposures, concussions, and trauma. The SSP is an easy-to-use app that lets you listen to specially filtered music for 30 minutes each day as part of a 5-hour cycle. Studies show the SSP has a profound effect on mental health and chronic conditions. Here’s a short podcast describing the Safe and Sound Protocol.
